Most of us are guessing.

Ask a club golfer where they lose shots and you'll usually hear "my putting" or "my driver". It's a fair guess. But it is a guess, built on the three-putt you remember from the 18th and the drive you sliced on the 1st.

Meanwhile the handicap index sits where it's sat all year, and the winter practice goes on whatever's most fun to hit.

A few honest numbers from your own rounds will tell you more than any of that.

Five rounds. One clear answer.

The 5-Round Leak Finder is a spreadsheet you fill in from your scorecard and a few pencil marks. After five rounds it tells you, in one line, where your biggest leak is and roughly how many shots a round it's costing you.

  • Your top three leaks, each with one simple thing to try
  • A chart of all four areas: tee shots and penalties, approach play, short game, putting
  • Benchmarks for five handicap bands, from 0-5 up to 29+, with the sources listed
  • A filled-in demo copy, so you can see how it works before you start

Your numbers stay in your own file. There are no macros and nothing gets sent anywhere.

How it works

Three steps, no gadgets.

1

Play and jot

On each hole, note whether you hit the fairway and the green, your putts, any penalty strokes and whether you got up and down. Medal, Stableford, roll-up or society day, it all counts.

2

Type it in

One row per hole, using drop-downs. Five to ten minutes a round, and the sheet flags anything that looks odd.

3

Read your leak

Add your handicap index and the Leak Report does the rest: your biggest leak, the next two, and what to work on first.

Coming next

When five rounds isn't enough.

The Fairway Figures tracker is the bigger version of the Leak Finder, for golfers who want to log every round and see whether the practice is paying off.

  • Strokes gained by area, against handicap-band baselines
  • Quick entry or shot-by-shot, whichever suits you
  • A dashboard with trend lines across the season
  • A club distance tracker and a practice priority list

Questions

Is the Leak Finder really free?

Yes. You give us an email address, we send you the spreadsheet. It's yours to keep.

Excel or Google Sheets?

Either. It's an Excel file, and it opens fine in Google Sheets with the formulas, drop-downs and chart intact.

I'm off 24. Is this for me?

Yes. The benchmarks run from 0-5 up to 29+, and higher handicaps tend to have bigger, clearer leaks.

Where do the benchmarks come from?

Published averages for amateur golfers, mainly from Shot Scope and Arccos, rounded and blended into five handicap bands. They're labelled as estimates and the sources are listed inside the file. Fairway Figures isn't connected to either company.

Do I need a GPS watch or an app?

No. A scorecard and a pencil will do.

What happens to my email address?

We use it to send the Leak Finder and occasional emails from Fairway Figures. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and we never sell your details.
